Suraj Kumar Chand Adds Asian Games Bronze to a Remarkable Year in Squash

Somaiya Vidyavihar University student and squash player Suraj Kumar Chand added another significant milestone to his sporting journey as a member of the Indian Men’s Squash Team that won the Bronze Medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026.

Suraj was part of India’s four-member squad alongside Abhay Singh, Veer Chotrani and Velavan Senthilkumar. He contributed to India’s campaign in the opening group-stage tie against China, defeating Du Shaoqian 3–0 (11–4, 11–2, 12–10) and giving India a strong start. The Indian team progressed to the semi-finals to secure the Bronze Medal.

The Asian Games achievement comes just months after Suraj created history at the FISU World University Championship Squash 2026 , hosted by Somaiya Vidyavihar University in August. Suraj won the Men’s Singles Gold Medal, becoming India’s first-ever World University Gold medallist in squash.

Congratulating Suraj and the Indian team, Prof. Ajay Kapoor, Vice Chancellor, Somaiya Vidyavihar University, said, “To see a Somaiya student progress from becoming a World University Champion to representing India as part of an Asian Games medal-winning team is a matter of immense pride for all of us. Suraj’s journey is an inspiration to our students and a reminder of what sustained commitment, discipline and opportunity can make possible.”

Suraj’s achievements also reflect Somaiya’s growing emphasis on creating an environment where sporting excellence can flourish alongside academics. Under the vision of Chancellor Shri Samir Somaiya , the University has continued to strengthen its sporting culture, infrastructure and opportunities for athletes. Somaiya Sports Academy, led by its Director Aazaz Khan and his team, has been instrumental in translating this vision into an ecosystem that encourages athletes to train, compete and pursue excellence at the highest levels.

From winning an individual World University title on the Somaiya campus to standing on the Asian Games podium as part of Team India, 2026 has marked an exceptional chapter in Suraj Kumar Chand’s sporting journey — and a proud one for the entire Somaiya community.
