The Department of International Studies organised a conversation on “India-US Relations” with former India Representative to the UN and IAEA Ambassador T P Sreenivasan. The event took place on July 24, 2023, in the Seminar Hall of SK Somaiya College, Somaiya Vidyavihar University.
Ambassador T P Sreenivasan spoke briefly about postgraduate studies in International Relations and job prospects in government, private, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), think tanks, and business schools, among other places. He explained the basic framework of this course at Somaiya Vidyavihar University.
Ambassador T P Sreenivasan believes that India-US relations are a roller coaster ride with highs and lows, as well as benefits and drawbacks for strategic relations and development. He emphasized the significance of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which has been renamed “Strategic Autonomy” to reflect the neutral ideology.
He shared his experiences as an ambassador, and the strategic decisions made by India in the face of various challenges. Further, he elaborated on matters such as India’s Economic Policy since 1991, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, American President Clinton’s strategic partnership with India, the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, and many other issues concerning India-US relations.
Ambassador T P Sreenivasan emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States in 2023, as well as the significant sanctions introduced in the fields of defense equipment, space technology, and India’s position in the Indo-Pacific. He also emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France to discuss Franco-Indian strategic cooperation. He engaged with the audience about China-India ties and provided a global perspective on China and its relations with India.
Somaiya students and educators interacted with Ambassador T P Sreenivasan and asked him about India-US relations. This provided a global perspective on T P Sreenivasan’s comprehension and personal viewpoint.
The session concluded with the ambassador providing unique insights and firsthand experiences that provoked students to think at an international level and to seek work opportunities in worldwide strategic communication and business.
