International Conference on Clinical Translation of Biomaterials

Somaiya Vidyavihar University hosted the International Conference on Clinical Translation of Biomaterial-based Therapeutics and Devices (ICBTD 2025) on February 6-7, 2025, aimed at addressing translation challenges, fostering knowledge exchange, and enhancing global healthcare. The event was organised by the Somaiya Centre for Integrated Science Education and Research and the Department of Mechanical Engineering and endorsed by the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs India (SBAOI), and supported by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and ANRF.

Left to right: Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, SVU; Dr Harikrishna Varma, Head, Biomedical Technology Wing, SCTIMST; Dr Biji Balakrishnan, Convenor ICBTD; Prof S Sivaram, Professor of Eminence, Dept of Polymer Science

Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, SVU, stressed the importance of translating biomedical technologies, especially in regenerative medicine and drug delivery. Prof S Sivaram, conference chair, highlighted that resistance to in-house technology is a key barrier in translating Indian biomedical products. Dr H K Varma discussed SBAOI’s activities and challenges in commercialising bone cement products. Shri Samir Somaiya, Chancellor of SVU, shared his challenges in launching Indian products internationally. A tribute was paid to Dr M S Valliathan, a pioneer in biomedical technology in India.

Dr Rohit Srivastava, Vigyanshri 2024 awardee, delivered a plenary talk on affordable healthcare technologies, inspiring young researchers toward entrepreneurship. The biomaterial design and processing session featured Dr Varma on translating biomaterials to clinical applications, Dr Abhaykumar Kuthe on tissue engineering, and Dr Saravana Kumar on orthopedic implants. The regulations and ethics session included talks by Dr Nagda on pediatric deformity correction, Dr Sujeesh on SCTIMST’s stents, Dr Naik on EC submissions, and Dr Fernandez on hard tissue reconstruction.

The second day’s session covered trends in diagnostic and therapeutic delivery, including Dr Jayakrishnan’s talk on crossing the blood-brain barrier, Dr Nair on osteoarthritis pain management, Dr Nitin Joshi on next-gen therapeutic delivery, and Dr Lizymol on radiopaque composites for dental applications. Young researchers presented innovative biomaterial studies. Prof Pillai discussed his contributions to peptide design, introduced new programs at SVU, and awarded outstanding research presentations. The conference concluded with networking and industry engagement sessions.
