K J Somaiya College of Engineering (KJSCE) marked the beginning of the 2023-24 academic year with an extensive orientation program for first-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) students. Organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the program was aimed to provide the students with an in-depth understanding of the campus, academic processes, and a range of amenities offered at the institution.
Grand Inauguration
The inauguration ceremony held in the KJSCE auditorium graced by the chief guest Dr. S S Mantha along with Vice-Chancellor Dr. V N Rajashekaran Pillai, Dr. Shubha Pandit, Principal, KJSCE.
In his keynote address, Dr. S S Mantha urged students to adopt values like integrity, open-mindedness, acceptance of diversity, perseverance, and social responsibility. “Upskilling and reskilling are crucial in this ever-evolving educational landscape,” Dr. Mantha added.
The chief guest for the afternoon session was Dr. R K Shevgaonkar, Provost of Somaiya Vidyavihar. His message emphasized the importance of staying relevant in a rapidly changing technological world.
Academic Insights and More
Throughout the orientation, faculty members and department heads introduced the students to various undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs. They also elaborated on the academic flexibility at KJSCE, Honours and Minors courses, semester-long internships, and student exchange programs with international universities. Students were offered a comprehensive overview of the Learning Management System (LMS), student councils, proctor system, and available scholarships.
Departmental Tours
Students were split into smaller groups and followed a prepared schedule to visit various departments. The tours offered invaluable insights into the lab equipment and the functions of each department.
Alumni Involvement
An Alumni Panel Session was organized for students in their parent departments, where they were informed about the Alumni Cell and the different events it organizes. Alumni shared their experiences and stressed the importance of networking in today’s competitive environment.
Specialized Sessions
Dr. Ramakrishnan Kalpathy, the Deputy Registrar of Academics at Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU), briefed the students on Digilocker, Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), and the National Service Scheme. Specialized sessions were also held on life skills, sexual harassment awareness, work-life balance, the future of work, ChatGPT, and Prompt Engineering by respective experts in the fields.
Attended by over 700 students, the 10-day orientation acted as a robust platform for them to understand the opportunities and avenues they could explore during their four-year engineering journey at KJSCE.
