NEP 2020 Steering Committee Meeting at SVU Paves the Way for Education Reform in Maharashtra

The state of Maharashtra witnessed a landmark event on 15th and 16th June 2023, as education luminaries and policymakers convened at Somaiya Vidyavihar University for the “NEP 2020 Steering Committee Meeting.” The two-day meeting aimed to assess the progress of National Education Policy (NEP) implementation in higher education institutions across the state, paving the way for educational reforms and empowering the next generation of learners.

The distinguished gathering brought together Pro Vice-Chancellors, Deans of Non-Agricultural Universities, and Principals of Autonomous Colleges from various regions within Maharashtra. With the primary objective of aligning educational practices, policies, and curriculum with NEP guidelines, the event provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving.

Prof K Ramasubramanian, a renowned professor at IIT Bombay, delved into the historical use of language in science and philosophy. Prof Ramasubramanian showcased how Sanskrit, once associated with religious rituals, transformed into the preferred language for scientific literature, seamlessly blending science with art. His insights underscored the importance of incorporating Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in curricula, offering students alternative perspectives and fostering critical thinking.

Shri Chandrakant Patil, Minister of Higher and Technical Education of Maharashtra, articulated a vision that highlighted the essence of India’s rich historical knowledge system. He emphasized the need to preserve and promote traditional knowledge, recognizing its timeless wisdom and insights. Hon Minister stressed the importance of aligning educational curricula with industry requirements, enabling students to be job-ready upon graduation, enhancing employability and career prospects.

Furthermore, Shri Patil spoke passionately about the government’s commitment to empowering autonomous colleges under the NEP. Encouraging educators and policymakers to embrace innovation, research, and industry collaboration, he set the bar high for achieving educational excellence in Maharashtra. With a forward-looking approach, the Minister outlined the path to success, uniting tradition and modernity.

The event concluded on a high note, with attendees expressing their commitment to collectively create a transformative educational landscape in Maharashtra. Participants left with a sense of purpose and determination, inspired by the leadership and vision of Shri Chandrakant Patil.
