K J Somaiya Institute of Management (earlier K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research), a premier B-school under the aegis of Somaiya Vidyavihar, was inaugurated at the hands of Dr Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Ex-Prime Minister of India in the year 1981. The institute, with its rich history of over four decades, has established itself as one of the top-25 Business Schools and Top-10 Private B-schools in India.

The institute, now a constituent of the Somaiya Vidyavihar University, draws its inspiration from the founder, Padma Bhushan (Late) Shri Karamshibhai Somaiyaji, and is committed to social responsibility. With a mission to foster a spirit of inquiry, enable livelihoods, encourage innovations, and create good citizenships, the institute provides a platform to learn, share and disseminate innovative management practices.

The institute benefits immensely from the able guidance of the Hon’ble Chancellor, Shri Samir Somaiya and the dynamic leadership of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai. The faculty, with their rich and varied experience and academic expertise harness the intellectual capabilities of the budding professionals enrolled for the MBA program. K J Somaiya Institute of Management has evolved over the years by strategizing and crafting varied programs in management to cater to the dynamic needs of the industry – Doctoral programme in Management, Executive MBA, Core MBA, Super Specialisations Management Programs in International Business, Retail Management, Financial Services, Integrated Marketing Communications, Healthcare Management, Human Resources, Sports Management and Data Science & Analytics to Part-Time programs in Management and Masters in Computer Applications.

In 2019, when the institute became a constituent unit of the Somaiya Vidyavihar University, all the PGDM programmes were rechristened to MBA and renaming of the Institute to K J Somaiya Institute of Management under a rebranding exercise. In May 2022, the institute successfully completed ‘the rigorous external review of the school’s mission, faculty qualifications, curricula, and ability to provide the highest-quality programs’ and was awarded the coveted Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In 2023, the institute made a significant leap in its NIRF ranking by securing 45th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework’s India Rankings for Management institutes.

Under the new leadership in 2023, the institute has envisaged strategic goals and through the creation of task forces is poised for bigger success aspiring to be in top 25 in NIRF and enter FT Management Institute Ranking in 5 years.
